Twitter Now Available in Right-to-Left Languages

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: MyGlobalSearch — Tags: , , , , Comments Off

In MyGlobal Search, Twitter launched four new languages, Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu, with the help of thirteen thousand volunteers around the globe. The new languages were added to Twitter Translation Center late January of this year. Volunteers worked hard to help twitter translate and localize Twitter and develop the ability to post right-to-left languages.

Twitter is thankful just to have such a huge following, let alone a following that would donate their time to make this translation a reality. The volunteers ranged from Saudi bloggers, Egyptian college students, BBC journalists, IT professionals, to Israeli schoolteachers and teenagers in Lebanon.

Some of the volunteers lived in places where twitter is blocked. The efforts is a  testament to how much of an impact twitter has had on our global community and how important it is for people to be connected.

Apple’s Recent Move May Mean Advances in Education Technology

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: MySearch Update — Tags: , , Comments Off

There’s no debate that education is important to American voters – In Mysearch Update I found that families are constantly battling with the modern day school system and asking the question, is my son or daughter getting the education they deserve?

Apple’s recent move into textbook publishing, makes you wonder if Apple will be the game-changer in education technology just like they have in everything else  (music – iPod, TV – Apple TV, and computers – iPad). Khan Academy announced that Vi Hart will be moving to Apple on January 3.  Vi Hart is recognized for her engaging videos explaining mathematics, but better recognized for her involvement with Khan Academy, the not-for-profit online venture that’s revolutionizing K-12 education.

Arguments in the education system are based off of a number of things. Some of the main arguments are saying that the school system is linear and that your education depends on where you live and how much money you have.  Education should be based on your ability to learn and tailored to specific learning styles.  Learning shouldn’t be a struggle.   Many argue that the modern school system is linear and that 1+1=2 is not how you learn science or even math.  Math and science should be taught holistically – What’s the big picture?  The education system lacks consistency. If you live in a poor area, you’ll get a poor education, and if you live in a rich area, you’ll get a rich education.  School teaches us to believe that if you get all A’s you’re smart, but if you get all C’s you’re only average.

I will use Mysearch to find more education news, whether it’s an update from an emerging education technology company or it’s an issue in recent political debates.

China and U.S. Playing Games in Pacific

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: My Web Search — Tags: , , , Comments Off

When the Cold War ended the U.S. found a new country to have an arms race with: China.  At first it wasn’t so much of a race but the U.S. taunting China with its Naval fleet, marching its fleet dangerously close to Chinese soil. Now however, China is building up its military force in an attempt to steer U.S carriers away from its homeland.

Neither nation has acknowledged publicly what the other is doing however both are showing their big guns with pride. China has recently developed a missile that is designed to target ships and kill whoever is on board.  This new missile is called the DF-21D and is built to strike a moving ship 1,700 miles off shore. The missile is designed to target ships from a high angle making it impossible forU.S.ships to fire down the attack. The unspoken goal forChinais to push U.S. Navy ships farther from its coast line.

MyWebSearch News reports that theU.S.is making its mark by quietly building up a force in the pacific stating that it’s preparing for a potential conflict in the pacific. Whether that is to be withNorth Korea or China is to be determined.

Arab League Delays Structure in Syria

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: My Web Search, Research — Tags: , , Comments Off

According the MyWebSearch News the Arab League deferred talks for three days on talks to move forward with discipliningSyria’s current regime for punishing protestors. Sanctions from Arab League member states would enhance the damage toSyria’s already diminished economy. The Arab League’s decision will also ensure that certain United Nations members such asChinaandRussia, which vetoed a draft U.N. resolution condemning the violence inSyria.

The league will send a certain number of monitors to observe and report on the regime’s compliance with the terms of the memorandum. This all comes four days after the league quietedSyria’s regime for its inability to accede to a league-negotiated resolution two weeks ago, eliciting fighting inDamascus.

The Local Coordination Committees, an activist group, said on Wednesday that 376 people have been killed since the Arab League’s plan was announced. The league’s statement made no mention ofSyria’s suspension, which was to take effect on Wednesday. But the absence ofSyria’s Arab League representative from Wednesday’s talks showed that the suspension was in effect.

China Makes it to Space

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: Events — Tags: , , , Comments Off

With the US Space program slowly shutting down, China has begun its intergalactic efforts. According to MyWebSearch News China had its first space docking this week. The Shenzhou-8 spacecraft docked with Tiangong-1 laboratory, this event is described as a huge hurdle China had to accomplish as they work toward a space station.

Countries like the US have worries about the military uses of the developing space station. For example China’s recent efforts could lead to the country’s DongFend 21D ballistics missile finally acquiring a guiding system.

China’s space program is just one of the few technological hurdles it has set out for itself. MyWebSearch News reported that China’s super speed rail has been having maintenance problems and has caused the train to lose passengers.

The communist nation has made a recent effort to change its public image to win the favor of the developing world.

English PM Ramps Up Police Force to Handle Rioters

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: MyWebSearch — Tags: , , , , Comments Off

Reports from MyWebSearch News indicate that rioting in London continues, and the current police force is overwhelmed in the midst of increasing violence. Protests began on Saturday night, after it was released that London police shot a 29-year-old father of four during an attempted arrest. Reports vary widely as to whether the victim was armed or dangerous, but the perceived racism and police brutality ignited a host of riots that have spread from the capital to Liverpool and Birmingham.

In response, English Prime Minister David Cameron cut his vacation to Italy short and traveled back to the burning country to call an emergency session of Parliament for Tuesday. He also increased police forces from 6,000 to 16,000, adding 10,000 additional troops to combat the widespread looting and arson throughout the city.

Evidence points to youth gangs as the perpetrators of most of the crimes; they communicated through Blackberry Messenger to coordinate attacks and meet in specific locations. Because of this, one government official suggested shutting down BBMs in the city. So far, there have been about 450 arrests, overloading prisons in London. Many prisoners have been transferred to nearby cities. Hackney, the neighborhood where riots began — as well as other neighborhoods — have been taking precautions to protect residents, according to MyWebSearch News.

Congress Reaches a Debt Deal and Avoids Economic Crisis

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: My Web Search — Tags: , , , , Comments Off

Party leaders came together this week and passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and prevent the United States from defaulting on its loans, according to MyWebSearch News. Despite the inability of President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner to reach a deal, the agreement was a joint effort from Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The new bill, which was passed by the House and Senate before the looming Aug. 2 deadline, raises the debt ceiling by $2 trillion dollars. Along with the debt limit increase, the bill makes $917 billion in spending cuts and establishes a special committee to determine whether more spending cuts are appropriate. Though President Obama was not shy in his push for revenue increase — that is, raising taxes — the new bill does not include any increases in revenue. Though far right conservatives refused to vote for a bill with tax increases, most still did not vote for the agreement.

I was glad to see on MyWebSearch News that Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in Tucson, Arizona just months ago, returned to vote in favor of the bill. She was greeted with a standing ovation and applause from both parties.

Terrorist Attacks Rock Norway, Killing 76

I was saddened to hear about the terrorist attacks in Norway, which I learned about during my web search over the weekend. Officials from Norway have confirmed that 76 people, many of them children, are dead after the bombing on the government building in the capital city and the shooting spree at the children’s camp on the nearby island.

Anders Behring Breivik was arrested in connection with the attacks, which he confessed to committing to police. At his arraignment on Monday, he pled not guilty to the terrorist attacks, and alluded to two more cells within his organization. Because of this, the judge sentenced him to eight weeks in prison while he awaits trial, four of which he will serve in solitary confinement.

Breivik used fertilizer that he purchased from Poland — legally — to manufacture the bomb he used during the attack in Oslo on a government building that houses the Prime Minister’s office. The blast killed eight people. The two guns he used for the island assault were also purchased legally. 32-year-old Breivik wore a police officer’s uniform to lure children out of their hiding places.

According to MyWebSearch News, Breivik could receive 21 years in jail for his crimes, the maximum sentence in Norway. Despite this relatively short sentence, there is a provision in Norwegian law that states a person can receive an additional 20-year sentence if deemed a threat to society. These provisional sentences can be renewed indefinitely.

The Republic of South Sudan Becomes the UN’s 193rd Member State

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: MyWebSearch — Tags: , , , Comments Off

During my web search today, I discovered that the Republic of South Sudan declared independence on July 9 and became the world’s newest nation. The country, after decades of fighting with the north’s primarily Arab population, seceded from Sudan amid support from the United States and other Western nations. In a referendum back in January, over 98 percent of the population — including those in the north and overseas expatriates — voted for independence.

According to MyWebSearch Update, the country became the 193rd member state of the United Nations on July 14. It also received its own dialing code, 211, specifically requested by leaders as it represents the year of the country’s independence.

A growing controversy surrounding the new nation, though, centers on its oil fields. Since the fields are primarily in the south, the new government must come to an agreement with its northern counterpart on how to split the revenues from the oil fields. The region has been dependent on its profits from the oil market for years, so this deal could have a large impact on the fledgling economy. Despite this, South Sudan remains one of the world’s poorest countries, with a worse still health situation due to the ongoing violence and frequent civil wars in the region.

My Web Search for the Latest Political News

by Zealous Zoe — Categories: MyWebSearch — Tags: , , , , Comments Off

My web search for the latest political news put me right smack in the middle of negotiations regarding the United States’ debt ceiling. For weeks, President Barack Obama and GOP leaders have been working on a compromise to reduce the nation’s debt to no avail. While Obama is pushing for raising taxes on the country’s richest Americans — which would reduce the US debt by $4 trillion — House Speaker John Boehner and his Republican counterparts are proposing a plan that cuts funding to Medicare as well as other domestic social programs.

Though Vice President Joe Biden presented a plan that took both parties into account, the Republican leaders walked out of negotiations. A notably frustrated Obama held a press conference yesterday, where he assured Americans he would not settle for a short-term deal. The president said he would veto any kind of monthly extension, saying that now is the time to solve this issue.

If Republicans and Democrats don’t reach an agreement, the US will begin to default on its obligations on August 2, without any borrowing capacity. Both parties hope to get a deal on the table by July 22 to allow time for the plan to pass the House and the Senate, but it seems as though negotiations are currently at a standstill. Obama said that negotiators will continue to meet daily, even through the weekend, until an agreement in reached.

I’ll be sure to my web search for the latest updates so I can be sure to know what happens in this debt ceiling debacle!
